Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you located? What are your hours?

We have no centralized/public location. All dogs are located in private foster homes. We do not have hours available to visit animals. To adopt a dog, please visit our adoption form.

How do I adopt?

To adopt a dog, please visit our adoption page. If your application is complete and looks like it might be the right fit, one of our volunteers will reach out to you with any questions they may have and ask for photos of your home where the dog will be spending the majority of its time. We will reach out to your references, and vets/landlord if applicable. Once we have approved applications, the foster and board members will select the right home for the pet.

Where do your dogs come from?

KYHPR partners with other rescues and shelters to take any unwanted animals that we are able to foster. We also partner with state and national organizations to assist in legal cases such as puppy-mill busts, hoarding situations, and animals that have been abandoned. We occasionally take owner surrenders depending on the circumstance and availability. If you have a pet that you’d like to surrender, please visit our Surrender An Animal page and complete the form. If you are a shelter looking to partner with us, please contact us at kyhopefulpaws@gmail.com.

How do I know if a specific pet is still available?

We try to update adopted pets within 24-hours of adoption. Please check our website for the most up-to-date list of available animals.

How do I know if I have been chosen for adoption?

Approved applicants will be notified when their home has been selected. We look carefully at each application and follow up on applications that specifically address each dog’s stated needs and best fit the dog’s temperament, health, and behavior requirements, so when you are applying, take the time to explain that you have rescue experience, for example, or you have trained a shy dog, or you have experience with dogs with allergies if these are part of the dog’s needs. These details will help your application rise to the top. Unfortunately due to the high volume of applications, we cannot respond to every applicant if you are not approved or if you have been approved but not chosen.

Why was my application denied?

The most common reasons your application might be denied include:

  • Incomplete or incorrect information. WE CANNOT look up your vet’s information. If you leave reference names but no numbers, we cannot complete the application.

  • Current animals in the home are not up-to-date on vaccinations, or not spayed/neutered. If applying, please make sure ALL PETS IN THE HOME INCLUDING CATS are up-to-date on ALL VACCINATIONS and must be sterilized. Please call your vet prior to applying to make sure your records are correct and also authorize them to provide us with information.

  • Your landlord has denied you.

  • You have falsified information - we absolutely check references, vet records, and where you live.

  • You are under the age of 21.

  • Your references did not recommend pet ownership at this time.

Why was I not chosen for a specific pet?

We sometimes get over 100 applications on a single dog. Our ultimate decision is based on the information we have and where we think the dog would be best suited. For example, you may have the perfect home, exceptional references, and work from home - but the dog you are applying for is very vocal and you live in a condo.

By allowing these animals into our rescue, it is our utmost responsibility to find the best match for that animal for them to live out their days in a forever home. We understand that your kids may have fallen in love with a specific dog, or a cat may look just like the one you used to have as a child, and we absolutely are empathetic to that. However, ultimately, it is our charge to make the best choice for the animal.

What happens to my approved application if I am not chosen?

Your approved application is good for up to a year. Please let us know if you are interested in a different animal in the future.

I haven’t heard back about a specific question on social media. Where are your employees?

KYHPR is SOLELY VOLUNTEER BASED. Our volunteers have day jobs, lives, careers, families, and other responsibilities outside of our organization. NO ONE at KYHPR is a paid employee. We try to do our best to respond to as many questions as possible but unfortunately, some things may be missed. Please have patience with our volunteer team and understand that we are individuals that are volunteering our time to help these animals.

Are your animals healthy?

All of our available dogs are spayed or neutered, are current on their vaccinations, and are already implanted with a microchip registered to KYHPR prior to placement. Pets have been treated for all medical conditions of which we are aware, and any ongoing or chronic conditions will be explained and any treatments or medications will be clearly described to applicants before adoption occurs. You will be given all health information available on your adopted pet.
